Allentown Ranks 12th, 22nd for the
Worst Air Pollution among Mid-Sized U.S. Cities

Bush Plan Favors Polluters over Public Health

The Lehigh Valley Group of the Sierra Club has joined with PennEnvironment and the American Lung Association of Pennsylvania to release “Danger in the Air: Unhealthy Levels of Air Pollution in 2003,” a Clear the Air analysis of data from ozone “smog” and fine particle “soot” monitors nationwide. The report shows massive air pollution problems across the country and includes detailed information for metropolitan areas in Pennsylvania.

Why is our air so poor? Power plants are the nation’s largest industrial source of air pollution, causing tens of thousands of premature deaths and many more asthma attacks, cardiovascular, and respiratory illnesses each year. The Bush administration is poised to finalize weak and delayed standards for smog- and soot-forming pollution from power plants, while opening up new loopholes in the law.
