In a precedent-setting
move, the Sierra Club announced an endorsement in the Democratic primary
for Lieutenant Governor. The environmental organization will support
State Senator Allen Kukovich of Westmoreland County in his bid for the
state's second-highest office.
"We are endorsing
Senator Kukovich because of his outstanding work for the natural environment
and his concern for the people who live in it," said Sierra Club leader
Dave McGuire in announcing the Club's decision. "Senator Kukovich has
twice earned a 100% voting record on the bipartisan Pennsylvania League
of Conservation Voters Scorecard," McGuire continued.
In its decision
to endorse Kukovich, the Sierra Club Pennsylvania Chapter considered
not only votes cast in the state senate, but also the Senator's willingness
to take a leadership role on environmental issues, such as energy conservation
and water quality. Kukovich has introduced a proposed state energy plan
called PENNCONSERVE, which emphasizes clean, safe energy sources and
promotes energy efficiency, which will protect our communities and consumer
dollars.
Senator Kukovich
also played a major role in the creation of the state PENNVEST program,
which helps communities to upgrade their water and sewer systems. "Senator
Kukovich could help lead the next Administration's efforts to protect
water quality, for our families, for our future. We need a leader with
the kind of integrity and vision that Allen Kukovich has demonstrated
over his 24 years of public service," said McGuire.
The Sierra Club
is the nation's oldest environmental organization, with over 700,000
members nationwide and over 28,000 in Pennsylvania. The Sierra Club
has worked to protect the natural and human environment since its formation
in 1892. In addition to its issue advocacy and outings programs, the
Sierra Club is one of the few environmental groups that endorse and
work for the election of candidates who support environmental and public
health protection.
In
Pennsylvania, no environmental organization, including the Sierra Club,
has previously made an endorsement for a Lt. Governor candidate in a
primary race. "In making its precedent-setting move, the Sierra Club
is supporting the only candidate who has both an exemplary voting record
and demonstrated environmental leadership," McGuire concluded.
