Sierra Club Opposes Mega Dog Kennel In Vera Cruz

Upper Milford Township is considering a proposal by Cloud Nine Pet Resort to build a 150-run boarding kennel, dog-training center, and 50-lot parking lot that would create about 1 acre of concrete and blacktop in an area prone to run off problems. The property is steeply sloped and mostly wetland. The proposal more the doubles the allowable limit of development on the parcel.
The kennel is uphill from Pheasant Hill Farm, a family-run certified organic farm owned by George and Melanie DeVault, who are both Sierra club members. It’s also uphill from the Leibert Creek. The developer would have to obtain a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit from DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) and approval from the Lehigh County Conservation District (LCCD). The DEP originally granted a permit for a 3-lot subdivision once proposed for the property, but the development plan has now changed.
The kennel would:
- Generate as much as 1000 to 15000 gallons of waste water a day (the equivalent of 5 to 7 single family homes)
- Submerge more than 1 acre of wetland under more than 1 foot of water
- Generate solid waste that would be collected in a 1500 gallon in-ground holding tank that would then be sprayed onto open ground that drains onto the DeVault’s property and into Leibert Creek. This waste would include dog excrement, medications, pesticides, and other pollutants.
- Be built uphill from bog turtle (an endangered species) habitat and streams that feed into the Leibert Creek, which has a naturally reproducing brown trout population.
The matter comes up for vote at the township planning commission March 29th and at the township supervisors meeting April 1. Please stay tuned to our email alerts for updates on these meetings.
