Update on Depue Island Resort Proposal

A note to inform you that the Citizens Advisory Commission to the DWGNRA approved a resolution on Sept. 9th at their Milford meeting to disapprove of development on any of the islands in the DWGNRA beyond what has already taken place, i. e. Shawnee Golf Course on Shawnee Island.

Mr. Kirkwood still has not announced any decision regarding use of Depue Island for a conference center but when the Subcommittee on Depue Island met with him this summer, Depue Island was still firmly an option.

Mr. Donahue Park Supt, stated that correspondence continues to flow in, in opposition to developing Depue Island, and that at no time has any contacts been made from the public which run counter to that position.

We feel that the good work of Sierra Club and the Lehigh Group-Sierra Club has played a large part in bringing the Advisory Commission to this position, and wish to congratulate you for helping us reach this milestone. The resolution, addressed to NPS, asks that NPS take steps as soon as possible to acquire the development rights of Depue Island to protect it for all generations in perpetuity and so that the Island's owners can focus on alternative plans on private property.
