Introduction to the
Lehigh Valley Group of the
Sierra Club

Who is the Lehigh Valley Group of the Sierra Club? We are a group of local citizens interested in protecting and preserving the environment in the cities of Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton, as well as the surrounding areas of Lehigh, Northampton, and Monroe Counties.

We are a volunteer organization, and count on people like you to make things happen. If you are interested in volunteering, check out our Volunteers Needed page, and find out where you can help.

The Sierra Club was founded by naturalist and writer John Muir in 1892 to protect the wilderness of the Sierra Nevada. Over the years, the activities of the Sierra Club have expanded to include issues ranging from climate change and ozone depletion to toxic chemical contamination and loss of biological diversity. We are working hard to ensure the government upholds Section 27 of the Constitution of Pennsylvania. This states in part:

"The people have a right to clean air, pure water, and to the preservation of the natural scenic, historic, and esthetic values of the environment. Pennsylvania's public natural resources are the common property of all the people, including generations to come. As trustees of these resources, the Commonwealth shall conserve and maintain them for the benefit of all the people."

Lehigh Valley Group's 2001 membership is about 1300. We act locally, and

• Organize local nature outings
• Hold public informational meetings
• Work on local, regional, state, and national environmental issues
• Evaluate environmental records of local political candidates.
