Lancaster Group member meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. on five Wednesdays during the year in Room 111 of Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster, PA (unless otherwise noted). Members and non-members of the Sierra Club are welcome.
2014 Member Meeting ScheduleMarch 19, 2014
Members and friends of the Sierra Club are invited to attend this free forum, which will be held in The Manor (formerly Armstrong Manor) at 2025 Lititz Pike--across from the Overlook Golf Course. Sponsored by the Manheim Township Historical Society (MTHS), Design Lancaster and the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group, the meeting will focus on how citizens can become directly involved in their communities so that their local municipal governments can help residents and businesses better protect, preserve and reuse the historic and natural resources of their properties.
The Belmont project, proposed for the historic former David and Catherine Mayer Farm at U.S. Rt. 30 and Fruitville Pike, will be discussed as one example where local zoning ordinances do not mesh with community goals and other regulating agencies, thereby limiting public involvement on issues such as retaining and preserving some of the many historic and natural features on the site.
Topics also will cover the proposed natural gas pipeline in southern Lancaster County, and projects and funding programs that affect natural resources such as woodlands, waterways, wetlands and wildlife habitat.
Leading the discussion will be a local historian and community representatives, and a descendant of Belmont builder and farmer David Mayer, whose family was among the original settlers on the Belmont Farm. Also attending will be representatives of MTHS, Design Lancaster, and the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group. The project's developer and the Manheim Township Board of Commissioners also will be invited. A Q&A session will follow.
