Events and Meetings

Monthly public group meetings are held on the third Wednesday of every month (except July) and generally begin at 6:30 p.m. Meetings are held in room 111 of Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster, PA (unless otherwise noted) and are open to both members and non-members of the Sierra Club.

Sierra Club Member Meeting

Wednesday, June 19, 2013 - 6:30 PM

All members and friends of the Sierra Club are welcome to join us at this Lancaster Group meeting as we discuss late spring and summer activities and seek input from everyone. The meeting will be held in Room 111 of Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster.

Hike at Rock Springs Serpentine Barrens

Saturday, June 22, 2013 - 10 AM

You are invited to join us for this two-mile trek through Rock Springs Serpentine Barrens in southern Lancaster County near the Maryland border.

This easy hike will cover some 170 acres of the barrens, a unique habitat of global significance that has over 400 species of butterflies and 100 species of native wildflowers. Hikers should park on the right shoulder of Mason-Dixon Road near the small Conservancy sign, where they will meet Outings Leader Jim Meenan and sign a waiver of liability. Directions: Take Route 272 south from Lancaster City to the intersection with 372 (The Buck). Continue south on 272 to Wakefield, where 272 makes a sharp turn to the left. Go straight on Route 222 for approximately 4.5 miles. Turn right onto Mason-Dixon Road and go approximately .6 mile. The preserve is on both sides of the road; park on right shoulder near the Conservancy sign.


The Sierra Club PA Chapter Member Outing

Friday-Saturday-Sunday, July 12-14, 2013 - 3:30 PM Friday - 3 PM Sunday

Sierra Club members are invited to take part in this Sierra Club PA Chapter Member Outing at scenic Susquehannock State Park in southern Lancaster County. Gather with us for fun and camaraderie as we enjoy a weekend of activities and meet Sierra Club members from around Pennsylvania.

This annual retreat is for all Sierra Club - PA Chapter members and their friends and families. Tenting space has been reserved and several hikes, outings, and ample kid friendly activities have been arranged. There also will be a potluck and BBQ dinner with free burgers and hot dogs provided by the Chapter. There is no charge to attend. However, donations will be appreciated to help cover expenses. Bug Hike

Saturday, July 27, 2013 - 9:30 AM

Join Jen Ericson for this easy one-mile walk on the trails of picturesque Landis Woods Park, just off the Lititz Pike at Neffsville.

We'll be searching for cool, creepy crawlies and flying insects. Be sure to bring water and wear close toed shoes.

Hikers should meet Jen at the outdoor theater in front of the Boettcher House Nature Museum, where they will sign a waiver of liability. Bike Rides on the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail

Saturday, August 10, 2013 - 10 & 11 AM

Come along with us and enjoy one or both of these moderately challenging eight-mile scenic rides that start and end at the Root Beer Barrel Trailhead, located at the intersection of Route 419 and Boyd St. in Cornwall.

The 10 a.m. ride goes north through ravines and farmland to Lebanon and back, while the 11 a.m. ride goes through woods to Mt. Gretna and back and includes sites of historical interest. Riders should meet leader Brian Vandegrift at the trailhead in Cornwall, where they will sign a waiver of liability.

Fall Foliage Hike

Saturday, October 12, 2013 - 9:30 AM

Members of the Lancaster Group invite you to participate in this seasonal hike in Landis Woods Park, just off the Lititz Pike at Neffsville. We'll enjoy the colorful leaves and discover how some animals may already be preparing for winter.

This is an easy one and one-half mile trek on well-maintained trails that meander through beautiful woods and along a small creek. Hikers should meet leader Jen Ericson at the outdoor theater in front of the Boettcher House Nature Museum, where they will sign a waiver of liability. Bring field guides, if you have one, dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.

Beyond Coal Presentation

Fundraising Dinner at Isaac's Famous Grilled Sandwiches

Eat in or take out during this event at Isaac's Granite Run Square location, 1559 Manheim Pike, Lancaster. Twenty-five percent of the cost of your meal will be donated to the Sierra Club-Lancaster Group. Fourth Annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike

Saturday, January 18, 2014 - 10 AM

The Sierra Club-Lancaster Group invites you to run or hike in this 5K (3.1 miles) trail race to show your support for the environment and specifically the plight of polar bears, the most well-known victims of global warming. Once again, this popular and successful event will be held in beautiful Lancaster County Central Park, Pavilion 22.
