Bob Millar: Political, Corporate Accountability, Genetic Engineering, International Human Rights, International Trade

While the Sierra Club is a non-partisan organization, we are regularly involved in the political process.

At a minimum, we want our members to be registered voters and good citizens. We encourage members to follow votes on the environment at the national, state, and local levels. We also encourage voter education efforts, and jointly sponsor with other environmental groups "voter guides" for both national and state candidates prior to each election.

We sometimes endorse candidates for office. Prior to any endorsement, we evaluate the voting records of any incumbent political officeholder and also ask all candidates to answer our questions concerning their positions on current environmental issues. Personal interviews with candidates may also be conducted. Good candidates may be endorsed, following discussions and votes at several levels of your Sierra Club. Endorsed candidates are indicated in our publications prior to the elections.

We also communicate with current political officeholders. We communicate our positions on issues before our elected representatives. Such communication can involve emails, phone calls, letters, petitions, and personal visits.

You can play an important role in both protecting the environment and expanding interest in environmental issues by helping us to monitor the political positions and votes of our local, state, and national elected officials. You can also help by helping us to identify new candidates who may be deserving of support from the Sierra Club.

To be more involved in these issue, please contact me at RobertJMillar@earthlink.net or attend a future meeting of our group.
