Clean air protections in Pennsylvania are under attack. Click
here to find out what you can do.
Dear Pennsylvania Sierra Club Supporter,
Clean air protections in Pennsylvania are under attack. This week
the Pennsylvania House Transportation Committee voted to report
out SB 1025, legislation that would repeal the Pennsylvania Clean
Vehicles program, which we need to cut air pollution in our state.
The Clean Vehicles standard ensures that all new vehicles sold in
the state will be required to use the best available tailpipe pollution
control technology. Already, ten other states nationwide have adopted
identical standards to help protect public health by cutting down
on smog and soot pollution from cars and trucks. This action by
the Transportation Committee sets the stage for a House floor vote
as early as next Monday, October 23.
The Committee members voted as follows:
THOSE WHO VOTED YES ON SB 1025 (OPPOSING OUR POSITION) WERE: GEIST,
ARMSTRONG, MARSICO, WILT, MAHER, J. EVANS, BALDWIN, FORCIER, GOOD,
HESS, SAYLOR, SCAVELLO, STAIRS, MCCALL, SOLOBAY, DERMODY, SANTONI,
PETRARCA, HALUSKA, WOJNARSKI.
THOSE WHO VOTED NO ON SB 1025 (SUPPORTING OUR POSITION) WERE: HARPER,
WATSON, GERBER, MELIO, SIPTROTH
NOT VOTING (ABSENT): MCGILL, RUFFING, ROBERTS
If your Representative is on the House Transportation Committee,
please contact him/her to express your opinion on their vote. The
environmental position was a "NO" vote on SB 1025. It
is possible that you could sway your Representative to vote correctly
on the floor, regardless of the Committee vote. We need to demonstrate
that there will be political pain for those who oppose clean air
protections, especially less than 3 weeks from the election. And
we need to reinforce, by thanking, those few who stuck by us for
this vote.
Please consider quickly sending a letter to the editor of your local
paper to draw attention to how your Representative voted on SB 1025.
But remember, a vote can happen next Monday.
TAKE ACTION: Call your State
Representative at:
House: (717) 787-2372
Find out who represents you at: www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/home/find.cfm
Tell them to:
1) Stand up for clean air protections and Vote NO on SB 1025
2) Automakers are already required to sell clean cars in ten other
states nationwide. Pennsylvania consumers deserve less polluting
vehicles too that will also save money at the gas pump.
3) Pennsylvania has already committed to adopting the clean vehicle
standards in order to improve air quality. Repealing the standards
would put the health of Pennsylvania residents at risk and jeopardize
federal funding for the state that is based upon meeting air quality
standards.
By requiring automakers to build cars, trucks, and SUVs that are
less polluting, people across the state will be able to breathe
easier. Already, 37 counties across the state fail to meet national
air quality standards for smog. If the General Assembly blocks implementation
of the Pennsylvania Clean Vehicles Program it will exacerbate chronic
air quality problems and increase air pollution related health problems
such as asthma attacks.
