Tell the Environmental Quality Board:
“Pennsylvania must clean up our air and protect our health
by adopting all of the changes proposed by PADEP for the Clean Vehicle
Program for the 2008 fleet of vehicles.”
WHY does Pennsylvania need to reduce air pollution from
cars?
In 2003 Pennsylvania was ranked 11th in the nation for the worst
smog pollution from cars and trucks and 37 PA counties, including
all of Southeast Pennsylvania, failed to meet federal air quality
standards. Counties that don’t meet the federal air quality
standards could be denied their Federal highway funds. Smog pollution
has serious health effects. It triggers an estimated 370,000 asthma
attacks annually and adversely affects millions of Pennsylvanians
with heart and respiratory problems resulting in more trips to the
hospital emergency room and premature deaths.
HOW will the PA Clean Vehicle Program make our air cleaner?
A primary source of smog pollution comes from “mobile sources”
like cars and trucks. The PA Clean Vehicle Program will create an
overall standard for tailpipe emissions for new vehicles sold in
Pennsylvania starting in 2009 that will reduce smog pollution by
10% and reduce global warming pollution by 25% by 2025.
A Simple Solution
The PA Clean Vehicle Program will provide consumers with more choices
when purchasing a new vehicle with no additional cost, including
cleaner models of cars and light trucks. Drivers will save money
at the pump because their cars will run more efficiently. By adopting
the PA Clean Vehicle Program, Pennsylvania will join 10 other states,
including New York and New Jersey, in moving the United States towards
cleaner cars and cleaner air for our future.
MAKE a difference
Share this fact sheet with friends, sign a postcard, attend an upcoming
public hearing, make a phone call, write a letter to the editor,
or host a Clean Car house party. These are all great ways to demonstrate
support for cleaner cars and cleaner air. The most important thing
is that the PA Department of Environmental Protection hears from
citizens, like you, in support of the PA Clean Vehicle Program.
Take Action
The DEP is accepting public comments on the PA Clean Vehicles
Program until April 12, 2006.
