Sierra Club endorsed and worked to elect more candidates than ever before in the 2007 general election. And more of our endorsed candidates won than ever before.

In Harrisburg, our bipartisan endorsements have helped to create a new environmental majority in the State House.

One of our endorsed candidates, Barbara McIlvane Smith (Chester) was the candidate whose win made the Democrats the majority (102 - 101) in the House.

With a slim Democratic majority, several of our friends are now chairing House Committees, including Rep. Camille "Bud" George (Clearfield), who resumes majority chairmanship of the Environmental Committee for the first time since Republicans seized control in 1994.

Another friend who now chairs a committee is Rep. Bob Freeman (Northampton), Local Government Committee, which deals with land use/sprawl issues.

In the Senate, Club-endorsed Chuck McIllhinney (R, Bucks) now chairs the Games and Fisheries Committee.

In the House, our endorsed candidates from both parties should make it easier to put together bipartisan environmental majorities.

With Governor Rendell's reelection, we can expect some Administration environmental initiatives to gain momentum.
