Thanks to a strong outpouring of public support, cars sold in Pennsylvania
will be cleaner, beginning with model year 2008.
The Sierra Club, working with other environmental and public health
groups, blocked legislation in the Lame Duck session of the 2006
PA General Assembly that would have overturned the Rendell Administration's
Clean Vehicles Program.
That means that this coming fall, drivers in Pennsylvania will
be able to purchase cars that meet the stricter California vehicle
emissions requirements.
Not only will these vehicles put out less smog-causing pollution,
which will improve air quality, but they will be more fuel-efficient.
And more fuel-efficient means they will both save money at the
pump, and they will also emit less carbon dioxide, which will help
in the battle against global warming.
Congratulations to everyone who wrote letters to legislators,
attended public hearings, signed petitions, etc. Now, if we could
just get some action on fuel-efficient vehicles out of Washington...
