PA State Forest Wild Areas - Worth Protecting

To: DCNR Secretary DiBerardinis

Dear DCNR Secretary DiBerardinis,

Pennsylvania State Forest Wild Areas are special places. Set aside by the Bureau of Forestry for passive recreation, they are still subject to commercial timber harvesting and other extractive uses like oil and gas drilling. The Bureau of Forestry should eliminate such environmentally harmful activities in Wild Areas. It should instead preserve these relatively large tracts for the creation of old-growth forests, which will benefit wildlife, water quality, camping, hiking, hunting, and fishing.

As my official comment on the draft Forest Resource Management Plan, I request that the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry:

  1. Protect State Forest Wild Areas by ending commercial logging and mineral, oil, and gas extraction activities within their boundaries.
  2. Create new Wild and Natural Areas so varying forest types in Pennsylvania can be represented in old-growth management.
  3. Provide interconnections of old-growth forests utilizing protected public forest lands.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
