Jennifer Lavery, Group Chair
The Northeastern Group and the Sierra Club as a whole is made up
of individuals and smaller groups of people that gather together
to work on one thing: Protection of our environment. That is the Grass Roots of our organization.
Without local members interested and willing to put the time,
energy and organization into working on various issues nothing will
happen. Your local
group is 100% volunteer. Everyone you see acting on behalf of the
Sierra club is a member like you that has just decided that the
issues are too important to ignore and has given their volunteer
time to change things. Below you can see the 11 counties that our group covers:

Every place that there are people, there are issues either from
the past, present or future that impact the local environment.
What local issues do we have? Right now our group is active on
several issues through the interest and time that some of our members
have given. And even
though we may not be the lead group working on many of these issues
we have tried to help through: letters, attending meetings/events,
interviews with the local media and articles in this newsletter.
Though there are other ways that the Sierra Club can get
involved: Litigation (law suits), Lobbying (hold elected officials
accountable! And let them know how we feel!), Protests (increase
public awareness of the issue!) and taking proactive approaches
(stop it before it happens!) All of these activities require something
that only you can give- volunteer
time. I have listed above several local issues, some counties
do not have issues after them though I am sure there are issues
local to where you live, please update me.
There are many issues that you can become active with that are
local to every community: Energy Conservation, Sprawl, Living Simply,
Wildlife Habitat, Water Resources, Transportation, Politics
to mention a few
Please consider becoming
an active Sierra Club volunteer. I am looking for local members
who would like to become volunteers and liaisons to local issues. Including the ones listed above.
